Lead Counselor—Middle School Travel Camp

JCC Middle School Travel Camp (Tiyul) Counselors will manage the daily routine and activities for their group.   Tiyul has daily trips to outdoor sites within the Austin area as well as a week of Community Service Camp for a group of 15, 7th-9th graders and 2 staff members.  For 2 separate weeks, there will be an out of town 4 night trip to another location in Texas.  Eligible candidates will be 18 by the start of camp and are able to pass a background check and fingerprint test.

Additional Skills required:

•        Love of the outdoors and adventure activities, especially water-based destinations
•        Experience with Middle Schoolers (grades 7-9) preferred
•        Ability to think on  your feet and adapt to changing situations

Responsibilities include:

•        Accountability for assigned campers’ needs, health, and safety at all times
•        Planning and implementing group activities and projects
•        Keeping the group on schedule and where they need to be
         Comfortable in and around a swimming pool and water
•        Other duties as assigned

Tiyul Schedule:

In town:  June 12-16, July 24-28, and August 7-11

Out of town:  June 26-June 30 and July 24-28

Senior Counselor

All counselors will be assigned to a group of 14-16 campers, based by grade (Kindergarten-6th grade: Day Camp, 7th-9th grade: Travel Camp). Counselors will manage the daily routine and activities for their group.  Eligible candidates will be 18 by the start of camp and are able to pass a background check and fingerprint test.

Responsibilities include:

       Accountability for assigned campers’ needs, health, and safety at all times
       Planning and implementing group activities and projects
       Keeping the group on schedule and where they need to be
       Comfortable in and around a swimming pool
       Mentoring younger staff
       Other duties as assigned

Junior Counselor

All counselors will be assigned to a group of 14-16 campers, based by grade (Kindergarten-4th Grade). Counselors will manage the daily routine and activities for their group.  Eligible candidates will have completed 10th or 11th grade by the start of camp and are able to pass a background check and fingerprint test.

Responsibilities include:

        •      Accountability for assigned campers’ needs, health, and safety at all times
       Implementing group activities and projects
       Keeping the group on schedule and where they need to be
        Comfortable in and around a swimming pool
       Other duties as assigned

Inclusion (Special Needs) Counselor

Campers with special needs are mainstreamed in JCC Summer Camps. Inclusion counselors are additional supports for 1-3 campers in a camp group.  All Inclusion Counselors will be assigned to a camper within a group, based by grade (Kindergarten-6th grade: Day Camp, 7th-9th grade: Travel Camp). Prior work experience with children with special needs preferred. Eligible candidates will be 18 by the start of camp and are able to pass a background check and fingerprint test.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist campers with special needs in the daily routine and group activities
  • Help to adapt activities to your camper’s abilities
  • Facilitate social interaction between camper and their peers
  • Write Daily Communication Reports to be sent home to parents
  • Comfortable in and around a swimming pool
  • Other duties as assigned
