The mission of the School of Dance at the J is to provide quality dance training in a positive, nurturing environment. In addition to learning dance steps, proper stretching, good manners and technique, students gain confidence as they master new skills.

The DanStarz AUDITIONS for the 2013-14 school year will be held the week of Monday, May 20 in the Aerobics Studio. |
DanStarz is the School of Dance at the J’s pre-professional performing company designed for students in grades 4-10 who are ready to take their skills to new heights and focus on the production aspect of being a dancer. This rigorous training program provides young dancers with challenging and artistically substantial learning experiences while addressing their needs for individual achievement and group identity. The company performs at JCC events and around the Austin community and attends a yearly dance competition.
Requirements to be a JCC DanStarz Member
To join DanStarz, students must attend the three day audition prep and audition, and be accepted by a panel of judges. Other requirements include:
- Must be in the 4th–10th grade,
- Have 2-3 years of dance technique,
- Maintain weekly attendance in the appropriate level Ballet/Tap class at the School of Dance at the J,
- Make a one-year commitment,
- Must participate in fundraising events, and
- Must participate in one mandatory community service event.
What to wear:
Leotard and tights (any color). No cover ups aside from form fitting dance shorts allowed. No t-shirts. No jewelry. Hair must be pinned and secured away from face. Jazz or ballet shoes for first part of audition required.

School of Dance at the J – Spring Recital weekend!
After a year of hard work in dance classes ranging from Creative Movement to Contemporary Dance, all classes will present their work in our 12th Annual Spring Recital!
Come and see our talented dancers this Sunday, May 5
Tickets are free of charge, seating is general admission, and doors open at 12:30 PM

Dance Camp
POST CAMP WEEK 2 (AUGUST 5-9)
For campers entering grades K–3
Campers explore the wonderful world of dance under the guidance of professional instructors, delving into the fundamentals of ballet, tap, modern, hip hop and musical theatre.
• Dance Warm-up
(stretches, across the floor body work, leaps, turns)
• First section of each day will be focused on a new style of dance
(ballet, tap, hip hop, modern, musical theatre)
• Second section will focus on the performance side of being a dancer
(learning choreography and performing onstage)
• Week ends with a Dance Performance in the Community Hall Stage
• Half-day of Dance Camp, half-day of fun camp activities
(outdoor games, free swim, etc.)

Dance Intensive
POST CAMP WEEK 2 (AUGUST 5-9)
For campers entering grades 4–8
Dancers will dive into the world of dance through an intense workshop style under the
guidance of professional instructors. This camp is highly recommended for all students who are interested in auditioning for DanStarz, school dance teams, or furthering their dance education.
• Each day will be divided into two sections and focus on a new style of dance discipline
(ballet, jazz, contemporary, musical theatre, hip hop, tap)
• Classes will also include:
(conditioning, anatomy, nutrition, improvisation, composition)
• Evaluations will be provided for each dancer to continue their dance development
